B’H

List of suggested items to pack for Uman

Even though we are providing for the main meals of the Chag – the Rosh

Hashana meals and Shabbat – there are people with children and the before / after days to plan for.

We have limited refrigerator space available for you – whatever you would

like to store or freeze, bring the items in throw away plastic, (containers ,

bags or foil) with your name and room number on it – when you throw

away either leftovers or storage bins – make sure it gets to the outside

trash bin. When you leave – DO NOT leave food in the fridge / freezer.

Better to bring as little as possible items that spoil quickly. You CAN leave

all non spoilable food items you want to donate rather than take them back, there are Jews that live in Uman all year round.

OR just buy a few things once you arrive – there IS what to buy, everything!

Food items to bring if needed:

• Canned items (tuna, canned fruits, corrn, pickles etc. (Don’t forget

the can opener or buy pop tops).

• Matzah / crackers

• Small plastic jar of peanut butter / jelly, wrapped, so not to crack

• Dried fruits and snacks – we don’t eat nuts on Rosh Hashana

• Instant Oatmeal / cereal bars

• Hard salami – NOT sliced lasts a long time

• Fruits that will not spoil in transit, such as apples and oranges

• Cookies, brownies (mezonot that won’t crumble)

• Chewing gum and other sweets – hard candies don’t give kids

• Plastic cutlery, cups, plates, napkins

• Toilet paper / tissue, (we do provide, bring a little extra just in case)

Clothing

The Ukraine is a northern country and the weather in Uman during

September/October can be cold and wet and you will be thankful you

brought rain / winter gear. You can always take layers off. Our Retreat

Guest house is close to the Tzion, so long walks to get “there” won’t be

necessary, but you will want to walk around anyway – when travelling with

children, even if you don’t need a sweater and rain coat, bring one for them.

Check out the forecast before you leave so as not to take unnecessary

items – we will also send weather updates:

http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/33587.html

This is a general list of clothing that should be included in your packing:

• Shabbos/Yom Tov clothes

• Kitel (if it’s your custom)

• Regular weekday clothes

• Rubbers or boots

• A warm sweater

• Scarf

• Heavyweight sleeping clothes (consider a heavy sweat suit)

• Winter raincoat

• One pair good walking shoes

• Hat

• Needle and thread for emergency repairs

In addition, the following items should not be forgotten:

• Tallis / Tefillin

• Daily and Shabbos siddur

• Yom Tov Machzor

• Selichos

• Travel size books for study

• Tikkun HaKlali and other prayers that can be recited at different

gravesites (don’t pass up our tours!)

• Enough Shabbos / Yom Tov candles

• 24 hour candles

• Kippot – 1 spare

• Tzitzis

• A book or two for bus and plane trips

It’s a good idea to make your own detailed list, so you can check off each

item as you pack. Some miscellaneous items also helpful are, pack pocket

knives in suitcase not carry ons:

• Pocket knife with can opener and other assorted tools

• Tissues / toilet paper

• Toiletries (toothbrush and paste, soap, shampoo, etc.)

• Towel / wash cloth (good idea to put your name on them).

• Small first aid kit – band aids, aspirin, etc.

• Camera

• Matches / lighter

Whatever you do, don’t forget your passport, money, visa and ticket!

Don’t hesitate to bring any other items that will add to your comfort on the

trip – just remember to keep it light. Don’t over bring clothing; don’t bring

glass or spoilable items of food. Stay focused on the purpose of your trip

and you will be able to get the very most out of it!

Valuables, you will be staying in a closed environment with a guard, and

people in your room are all respected and like minded professional people

like yourself, nevertheless, we need to inform you to bring valuables at your

own risk, as we take no responsibility for “loosing them”, and we have no

central safe.

Fathers travelling with small children – bring their favorite toy, book,

sleeping blanket, treats or whatever he needs, (and a secret note from

Mommy in the suitcase helps!)

P.S. Thank you Rabbi Chaim Kramer for most of this list!
